FULL-TIME Firefighter AEMT/Paramedic

The Town of Hampden is seeking applicants for a full-time firefighter/EMT (Advanced or Paramedic). Hampden Public Safety is a community-centered agency committed to providing professional and progressive public safety services.

Hampden is located just south of Bangor. We are a 12-member career department serving nearly 7,500 residents. We have one Class A pumper/tanker, quint (delivery fall 2021), two ambulances, a brush truck, and utility truck.

Requirements: Applicants must be licensed at the AEMT level or higher to apply for this position. Candidates with State FF I and II certification are desired. Candidates that are not currently Paramedics will be required to obtain their Paramedic license (within 3 years) per Local 4903 Collective Bargaining Agreement. Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, Applicants will be required to pass a background check, Hampden Fire Department Physical Agility Test, a written test, complete a job related assessment center, and a medical exam.

Benefits: The Hampden Fire Department offers a competitive wage/benefits package, excellent retirement options, opportunities for advancement and professional growth, 12 paid holidays, and vacation time.

Wages: The rate of pay is $22.68 to $27.57. A lateral entry at the Public Safety Director’s discretion is available based on training and experience.

Health Insurance: Maine Municipal Employees Health Trust PPO 2500 with 90% Med-A-Vision Plan. The Town pays 100% for the employee and 70% for a family plan.

Retirement: Maine State Retirement plan 3C, which includes 2/3 pay after 25 years of service with no minimum age attainment, and COLA; or I.C.M.A. with a 10% (non-matching by the employee) contribution by the Town. The Town will contribute an additional .5% with an employee contribution to the I.C.M.A. 457 Plan.

Schedule: 42- hour work week. Shift pattern is 24 hours on duty, 24 hours off duty, 24 hours on duty, 5 days off duty.

Sick Leave Incentive: The Town will make available retirement medical benefits offered under I.C.M.A. The Town will contribute 12 hours per month upon the employee accumulating the maximum sick time hours of 1,008.

The Town of Vinalhaven EMS is a Basic Service, licensed to the paramedic level.  Our services average approximately 200 calls per year, with 65% transported to the mainland.  We pride ourselves on offering the same quality of care that one would expect on the mainland, despite our remoteness.  We are looking for an Ambulance Director who can support our good work and improve on it.

The Town of Vinalhaven, a year-round island community of over 1,200 people, is located 12 miles from the mainland in Penobscot Bay and its population swells to over 3,000 in the summer.  The island is serviced by Islands Community Medical Services (ICMS), a federally qualified health center staffed at a minimum by a mid-level provider 24-7.

A Transport Medicine paramedic is a staff paramedic who has received specialized training to meet the needs of critical patients, both in-house patients and patients being transported (by air or by ground) to a tertiary care center. This person must be adequately prepared by experience and training to care for cases ranging in acuity from non-urgent to life-threatening and from minor injuries to major trauma. S/he must demonstrate an ability to cope with extreme emergent situations while remaining calm, and demonstrate recognition of the value and dignity of the individual without regard to the nature of the illness/injury or the circumstances leading to it. The Transport Medicine Paramedic is part of a team, providing a service that may be needed at any given moment. The primary function will include arranging and performing critical care interfacility transfers as part of a Nurse- Paramedic team. The CCT paramedic schedule will include rotations on a 911 ambulance.
