APEMS EMCC Logo v3Eastern Maine Community College is located in Bangor Maine on a 72 acre campus located in close proximity to the Hogan Road exit off Interstate 95. It was established in 1966 by the Maine State Legislature, under the authority of the State Board of Education, EMCC was originally known as Eastern Maine Vocational Technical Institute (EMVTI) and after several name changes over the years, in 2003 was changed to it’s current name as a “community” college.

The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Technology Program provides the opportunity to earn a Certificate and/or an Associate in Applied Science Degree to individuals who work with ambulance services, rescue squads, fire services, and other first responder organizations. The program augments a nationally recognized technical core with general education courses and is held at the New Public Safety Training Center with access to an advanced patient simulation lab.

The advanced programs (Advanced EMT or Paramedic) are traditionally taken on a part-time basis. The EMT programs are traditionally taken within a semester as a single course with a variety of schedules. Emergency Medical Services Technology programs establish the educational path to rewarding careers for Maine Licensed EMT, AEMT, and Paramedics.

Awards of Completion are given at three levels as students complete technical courses and are prepared to sit for State Licensure. These three Awards of Completion are:

Award for EMT EMS123 is required.
Award for Advanced EMT EMS123, EMS201, EMS202, EMS205, and EMS206 are required.
Award for Paramedic All Intermediate courses as well as EMS208, EMS209, EMS211, EMS212, EMS213, EMS214, EMS215, EMS216, and EMS217.

Academic Program Prerequisites

EMT (Emergency Medical Technician)

Accuplacer-Reading/Composition Test
This test must be scheduled through a college or a Higher Education Facility and completed with a passing score of 65 or higher. Official copies of the test scores must be turned in to our office by faxing to 207-974-4879 or emailing to [email protected].

Immunization Records
Please use the link on our website for access to the immunization form and have your primary care physician complete it and fax the completed copy to our office at 207-974-4879, attention Heather McGlauflin. Please indicate the course number (ex 123-30) given to you, at time of registration or in your welcome letter, in the appropriate place on the immunization form.

Healthcare Provider CPR
Students must have a current Healthcare Provider CPR certification that does not expire during the course time-frame. Proof must be presented to the instructor the first night of class. If you are in need of a Healthcare Provider CPR course please click HERE

AEMT (Advanced Emergency Medical Technician)

All students entering the AEMT program are required to be licensed at the EMT level to apply to the ALS Pathway and must go through the selection process, determined by the Committee.

Application Process
Applications must be completed to the college and can be found on the colleges’ website (click HERE. Evaluation packets must be completed by the 3 stated references. It is recommended to give a stamped and addressed envelope along with the form to each reference, to be mailed back to the college.

Student selection is based upon scores of the Accuplacer Reading/Comp (65+) and Write Placer in addition to the Medical Knowledge Exam (76+) (scheduled through the college) in addition to the 3 reference evaluations.

Upon successful completion of the Advanced EMT program, students will have 2 years to enroll into the Paramedic program.

Students currently accepted into the ALS Pathway (AEMT to Paramedic Courses) will have a guaranteed spot in the upcoming Paramedic program upon successful completion of each step. If you are not currently enrolled in the ALS Pathway through our program, you will have to submit an application to the college and follow the Application Process for the program.
